Baphomet Postcard
$39.95Vintage 1970s Baphomet Postcard Baphomet has been referenced since at least the 1090s, possibly linked to Islam, as chroniclers referred to mosques as "Bafumarias." Some suggest it may derive from "Mahomet," an alternate spelling of Muhammad, although many theories exist. The figure gained notoriety during the Inquisition with the Knights Templar, who, under torture, sometimes confessed to worshipping a pagan idol named Baphomet, though not consistently across the order. Its true connection to the Templars remains uncertain, possibly stemming from fabricated accusations by the Church. After a period of relative obscurity, Baphomet reemerged in 19th-century occult writings, particularly through Eliphas Lévi, who illustrated a human-goat figure known as the "Sabbatic Goat." This depiction influenced the Rider-Waite tarot's Devil image, and Baphomet is viewed in some mystical traditions as a deity embodying the universe and its opposing forces. This 1970s oversized postcard features a photograph of a statue of Baphomet, based on an illustration by Eliphas Lévi, with the title at the bottom reading, 'Baphomet, The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic.' The text on the back of the postcard reads, BAPHOMET – The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, 235 Jefferson (Fisherman's Wharf), San Francisco, California, and the caption, 'The Horned God of the Witches or the Goat-Headed Devil was the traditional figure of evil during the 1600s.' Each postcard is in good condition for its age and measures 21cm x 15cm. Dictionary of Ancient Magic Words
$54.95Dictionary of Ancient Magic Words and Spells: From Abraxas to Zoar by Claude Lecouteux From Abracadabra to the now famous spells of the Harry Potter series, magic words are no longer confined to the practices of pagans, alchemists, witches, and occultists. They have become part of the popular imagination of the Western world. Passed down from ancient Babylon, Egypt, and Greece, these words and the rituals surrounding them have survived through the millennia because they work. And as scholar Claude Lecouteux reveals, often the more impenetrable they seem, the more effective they are. Presenting a wealth of material on magical words, signs, and charms, both common and obscure, Lecouteux also explores the magical words and spells of ancient Scandinavia, the Hispano-Arabic magic of Spain before the Reconquista, the traditions passed down from ancient Egypt, and those that have stayed in use until the present day. The High Magic of Talismans & Amulets
$49.95The High Magic of Talismans & Amulets: Tradition and Craft by Claude Lecouteux A comprehensive study of the use of talismans and amulets in the Western Mystery Tradition. • Provides an in-depth look at the medieval and Renaissance use of amulets and talismans, including the work of Agrippa, Albertus Magnus, and Athanasius Kircher. • Provides a full summary of the magical knowledge required to make an amulet or talisman, including the invocations required to activate their powers. • Reviews different kinds of amulets and talismans, from ancient jewelry and magical objects to the modern rabbit’s foot or lucky horseshoe. The use of talismans and amulets stretches back nearly to the dawn of man, from everyday items magically prepared, such as horns or coins, to intricate and beautiful jewelry imbued with protective powers. Drawing on his private collection of medieval manuscripts as well as his privileged access to the rare book archives of major European universities, Claude Lecouteux provides a comprehensive history of the use of talismans and amulets for protection, healing, and divine influence. He explores their use in the Western Mystery Tradition as well as Eastern and Middle Eastern beliefs about these magical objects and their incorporation–despite Church anathema–into the Christian tradition of Medieval Europe. Reviewing many different kinds of amulets and talismans used throughout the ages, such as a rabbit’s foot, horseshoe, gris-gris bag, or an inscribed parchment charged through ritual, he details the principles and symbology behind each object and shows that their use is still as widespread today as any time in the past. Lecouteux explains the high magic behind the hermetic art of crafting amulets and talismans: the chains of sympathy, astrological geography, and the invocations required to activate their powers. He explores the work of adepts such as Agrippa, Albertus Magnus, and Athanasius Kircher, including an in-depth look at Kircher’s work on planetary seals in his Oedipus Aegyptiacus. Illustrated throughout with period art depicting magical symbols, seals, and a wide array of talismans and amulets, this comprehensive study provides a practical guide to the historical development and step-by-step creation of magical objects. Witchcraft A History in 13 Trials
$34.95Witchcraft A History in 13 Trials by Marion Gibson Salem, King James VI, Malleus Maleficarum. The world of witch hunts and witch trials sounds antiquated, relics of an unenlightened and brutal age. However, 'witch hunt' is heard often in the present-day media, and the misogyny it is rooted in is all too familiar today. A woman was prosecuted under the 1735 Witchcraft Act as recently as 1944. This book uses thirteen significant trials to explore the history of witchcraft and witch hunts. As well as investigating some of the most famous trials from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, it takes us in new and surprising directions. It shows us how witchcraft was decriminalised in the 18th century, only to be reimagined by the 1780s Romantic radicals. We will learn how it evolved from being seen as a threat to Christianity to perceived as gendered persecution, and how trials against chieftains in Africa stoked anger against colonial rule. Significantly, the book tells the stories of the victims - women, such as Helena Scheuberin and Joan Wright - whose stories have too often been overshadowed by those of the powerful men, such as King James VI and I and “Witchfinder General” Matthew Hopkins, who hounded them. While this will be a history of witchcraft, the subject cannot be consigned to the history books. Hundreds of people, mostly women, are tried and killed as witches every year in Africa. ‘WITCH HUNT!’ is as common in our language today as ever it was, and witches are still on trial across the world. Witchcraft: The Old Religion
$26.95Witchcraft: The Old Religion by Leo Louis Martello Most books written on Witchcraft are by non-witches. They discuss Witchcraft not as it really is but as it has been defined by the Catholic and other Christian Churches. Many are blatantly deceptive or totally ignorant of the truth. Dr. Leo Louis Martello writes about the roots of the Old Religion as practiced today by witches of many different traditions. He shows the differences between true Witches, Old Religionists, Pop Witches, Christian-defined Witches and Satanists. Witchcraft, or the Old Religion, is probably the only one that has not discriminated against women. In many branches the Goddess is superior to the male God, in others they are equal. Dr. Martello is an initiated Witch and elder in three other witch traditions besides his own. His views as both theorist and activist have often been controversial. He is founder of the Witches Liberation Movement, director of WICA (Witches International Craft Associates) and the Witches Anti-Defamation League. Dr. Martello believes that Witchcraft, the Old Religion, may be the faith of the future. Sacred cows are being challenged. Old terms are being updated. Modern witches are fighting for their civil rights.
