Jet Cameo Brooch ‘Lady with Headband’
$295.00
This antique mourning brooch represents a rare example of Victorian craftsmanship. Hand-carved from genuine Jet, it displays an ornate portrait cameo with refined facial features and an elaborate design characteristic of the period. The artefact remains exceptionally well-preserved, exhibiting minimal wear and exemplifying high-quality workmanship.
Jet is the fossilised wood of Araucaria araucana (Monkey Puzzle) and related species, which flourished during the Jurassic period, approximately 150 to 180 million years ago. Renowned for its deep, lustrous black colour and rarity, Jet became prominent in the Victorian era (1860–1890). During this period, black jewellery transitioned from solely mourning adornment to a sophisticated symbol of style. Objects crafted from Jet, bog oak, vulcanite, or pressed horn often held significant personal meaning, serving as mementoes of affection, loss, and remembrance.
Victorian cameos typically featured delicate and intricate carvings, often depicting mythological figures, notable individuals, or symbolic themes. Cameo jewellery was believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck to the wearer. This brooch serves not only as an antique artefact but also as a tangible connection to the artistic and emotional values of the Victorian era.
